Frequently asked questions

How should I choose a reference photo?

My recommendations for reference photos that make successful paintings:

  • Crisp, high-quality references will result in the most life-like paintings. A painting can only be as detailed as the photo provided.
  • Avoid under or overexposed photos, which often lack sufficient detail.
  • Natural, outdoor lighting is usually best.
  • Avoid backlighting – lighting coming from behind the subject.
  • Take the photo at the subject’s level. Avoid looking down or up on the subject.
  • Photos may be combined. For example, the subject from one photo might be painted with the background from another. Or subjects from 2 separate photos can be painted together. Combining photos works best when the lighting is similar between them.

These are guidelines, not rules. If you have a photo you’re unsure of, feel free to email it and I can provide feedback. You may also send multiple, and I’m happy to make a recommendation.

How long do commissions take?

Timelines vary based on painting size and complexity, but paintings will take at least several weeks from intake. If you have a specific deadline or event you need the painting by, please let me know and I'll try my best to accommodate it.

How much does shipping cost?

Depending on the size of the painting, shipping may cost between $15 and $50 and will be added to the final invoice.

I offer free local delivery within the Seattle area and encourage this option whenever possible!

What materials do you work with?

I work with professional quality slow-drying acrylics. The longer working time allows for more traditional painting techniques that resemble oil paintings. They are rated for excellent lightfastness, so you don’t have to worry about your painting fading over time.

I typically paint on archival premium canvas stretched onto 1.5" deep stretchers. However other surfaces are available upon request.

Do you ship outside of the U.S.?

Unfortunately I'm only able to offer shipping within the US.

When is payment due?

A 50% deposit is due before I begin painting. The final 50% and any applicable shipping fees are due prior to delivery.
